The Pros and Cons of Coaching

Pros and cons of coaching.

If you haven’t had a coach before you may have lots of questions about the benefits and how it works. Some of your friends may even have a list of the pros or cons of coaching, but you like to do some research for yourself, right?

Being a coach I can share with you both the pros and the cons of coaching. I could be all fluffy and tell you about how wonderful it is, but I’m not here to ‘butter you up’. I want you to be fully aware of what to expect so that when you do decide to work with a coach you are coming from a place of power, not naivety.

Let me share with you my top 5 of each.

Let’s start with the pros

Coaching helps you get clarity. Being unclear about decisions and goals is one of the biggest blocks people find. A good coach will help you get specific and clear about what you want and how to achieve it.

Your Coach holds you accountable. As you work with your coach there will be certain ‘tasks’ that you will agree to do, in order to make sure you get the most benefit from your coaching. Your coach will be your accountability partner, to make sure that you don’t stray and neglect to put the work in.

Coaches share tools and techniques that you can put into practice for any future situations. The coaching experience doesn’t just cover the weeks you work with your coach. You will be able to use the tools you learn in future situations, giving you a reusable ‘toolkit’.

Coaches aren’t for life, or just for Christmas. As you work with your coach you will grow mentally, energetically, spiritually and often financially. External situations, relationships and experiences in your life will improve as you make the internal changes. Your coach may grow with you, and expand their services. However, you may find that you get to a point where you are ready for a different coach, and that’s OK.

Coaches empower their clients. Often people chose to start coaching because they can’t see the way out of their situation, and they have decided that they have had enough of reliving the same old life, everyday. Your coach will empower you to make changes, take determined action, step into your power and show certainty. Resulting in alignment with your purpose, success, and respect for yourself.

The cons of coaching

The results aren’t necessarily immediate. Coaching is not a band-aid. You didn’t get to where you are overnight, and so the results will not be overnight either. You will start to see changes from the first session, but repeated action will compound to give you long term results.

You have to do the work. Your coach cannot make the changes necessary for you. You will have to do the work yourself. Coaches guide and support, they work with you. Don’t expect your coach to magically make the internal or external shifts for you, that’s your job.

Coaches trigger you. A good coach will not tell you what you want to hear, they will tell you what you need to hear. They may trigger you at times, but the truth isn’t always a pretty pill to swallow. They will never be malicious, but you may not be ready to hear what they have to say. Usually because you know it is the truth but you have been trying to deny it. Your coach will call you out, which will benefit your results in the long run.

Coaches aren’t mental health practitioners. A coach does not ‘cure’ anything. We don’t believe you need curing, to start with, but that you need to remember. You have all the answers you need inside and your coach will help you coax them out. If you are suffering from unwanted mental health then a therapist would be the right choice for you.

Coaches don’t promise magic. You might be looking for a quick fix solution, but rest assured there isn’t one. We never promise to magically change your life, that’s your job. We show you your power, help unlock your inner strength and wisdom and the magic is all you.

Coaching is a life changing event...

…that will improve the way you live your life. But you have to be ready for it, you have to be committed to yourself and the change.

You will know when it’s time, because the thought of life staying the same way will be unbearable.

For some, they manage to identify that need and want  before hitting rock bottom. For others it’s the fall that makes them wake up and realise that now is the time.

Knowing the pros and the cons of coaching, as well as the cost, will help you make the informed choice you need. Also help you decide what kind of coaching is right for you.
